JUST A BIT OF "SELF-TALK" ON A SATURDAY...

So, today while browsing my sitemeter... I kept wondering why there were so many clicks coming in from twitter.  I followed the link and was pretty shocked to discover that someone had posted about my blog.

Apparently the person was quite offended that I had used the name "em jay" since her very good friend has the same nickname.  Then I found a whole thread of tweets about me being "unoriginal" (I had actually never seen the other emjay blog till now).  I'm not saying that it is wrong to be offended or to post that opinion about me, because that is the great thing about this day and age.  With blogging, and twitter, and facebook, etc-- everyone is entitled to their opinions.  I'm also not posting this to point out the person, or to be mad, or upset.

I guess the reason I'm writing this is because I was pretty hurt, and a little bit disheartened by it.  Especially since I feel I put my heart and soul into this blog sometimes.  And  I also try to be very aware of not copying or offending anyone (though sometimes I take inspiration from others...and credit them)... I have always felt so supported, and have been overjoyed to find such an open community of crafters and bloggers on the web... it really disenchanted me somewhat.  I actually felt like it took the joy of blogging away a little for me and considered quitting.

But after some self-talk (yes, that's the therapist in me-- can't help it, it's my profession.  and therapists need therapy too!) I decided that it's true everyone is entitled to their opinion and to share it-- it's a free country as they say.  and really, you can't please everybody.  This blog is exactly what it's title is--about me and my daughter emily jay (em jay).  And my opinion is that there's nothing wrong with that.  It's also wrong of me to overlook all of the other wonderful, good-hearted people out there doing their thing...and allowing me to do mine.

So, I guess in the end this turned out to be an appreciation post of some sort.  as well as a "snap out of it Joanne, be a bit more understanding and accepting and...let it go" post.

I guess it goes to show... or prove that I am only human.  We are all only human.  I am letting it go...

Thanks, everybody!

Be back later with a bunch of ATC swaps I've been working on...

p.s. em jay has a fever, again. what is going on????

oh i am so sorry to hear that but it's great that you understand the situation and have "let go". I am not a therapist but I tend to analyse myself alot too. I find that it really helps. xo

Don't worry Joanne, some people have nothing better to do than to criticize others. I know that the meaning behind the title of your blog means a lot to you as it does to all those who know you. You are a mommy now, so your blog includes the special mother-daughter relationship that you share with Emjay (which is what I've called her from day one). You're right that everyone is entitled to having their own opinions but who can honestly say they've visited each and every blog in the entire world and not copied some part or borrowed ideas from those blogs??? I just wanted to show my support and let you know that I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!! Don't let anyone discourage you from doing what you love to do, which is creating and sharing your creativity with Emjay and all those who enjoy your blog ;-)

I can't believe somebody would be so petty that you used a title similar to theirs. Personally I think that person needs to grow up and realize that EVERYTHING in the world has been done before, and there is no such thing as being original anymore. Sorry this kind of came off as a venting comment, but really this girl sounds like she is creating drama reminiscent of high school girls.

you are right, you are entitled to your opinion and you are entitled to do whatever you want on the internet. so is everybody else.

my tweet wasn't meant to offend or upset you. in fact, it was just my opinion. sometimes people just need to take things with a grain of salt. i have had to do this on many occasions on my blog/twitter.

Hi :) I recently started reading your blog and while it did remind of that same person (Who I completely love and am not "bashing," just for the record! lol), I really didn't think much about it. It seemed a little common to me personally - we used to call a girl at school that because of her initials, lol.

I wouldn't put much thought into it, though. It's just the internet - people sometimes take it way too seriously and miss out on the big picture: meeting people with a common interest and getting to know them :)

hey joanne!
i haven't been on ANY blogs lately since our MAC died :( so i only saw this today...but i just wanted to say that i'm SO GLAD that you have decided NOT to quit, because your blog truly is an inspiration, on crafting yes, but also an inspiration to be a better person, treat others kindly and to be a good mom and wife. whoever out there is criticizing you obviously DOES NOT "get" who you are, because if they did, how could anyone criticize you?! the fact that you picked the name "em jay" for your blog is because it's your daughter's name, for goodness sake! sheesh!! i can't believe some people. and you of all people are SO kind hearted and respectful, so i'm glad that you "self talked" yourself out of other peoples ignorance and insensitivity! keep on blogging girl, there are many followers out there who LOVE you!! :o)

I'm so appreciative of ALL your comments!

Shan--you don't know how much your words mean to me...hope to see you soon!

biscuit-- I try to take things with a grain of salt. thing is, I'm the kind of person that takes a grain of salt and turns into a margarita--or something equally as yummy! (you know like lemons into lemonade...) haha! sounds crazy but that's me! take care.
